Castables
Our range of Castables has been designed to cover the general needs of industry. High temperature dense castables are for use in zones where severe heat conditions occur, while lightweight insulation castables are for use as backing materials to reduce heat losses.
As a general rule, castables are best used for duty not less than within 400°C of their maximum service temperature. This ensures that the material is fully matured and a good ceramic bond is formed. For special conditions where gas erosion or mechanical abrasion occurs, purpose-made castable mixes can be supplied to suit.

Pre-Cast Combustion Chamber
The pre-cast combustion chamber is for use on oil and gas fired hot water and central heating boilers. The advantages of this type of combustion chamber are as follows:
- Combustion chamber sections are set in dry and can be fired on completion of installation in accordance with firing instructions.
- Due to simplicity of design, installation costs can be considerably reduced by using unskilled labour.
- Shape of construction chamber, including radiant angles, ensures better combustion and transfer of heat to boiler waterways.
- Adequate wall thickness of pre-cast sections gives extra protection and strength, and stability of target wall.
- Design incorporates low side walls and higher rear wall to meet with modern oil burner requirements.
- Pre-cast combustion chamber sections contain lightweight refractory aggregate to obtain quick heat propagation.
- Replacement of one or more pre-cast sections can be accomplished without disturbing the remainder of the combustion chamber.
Combustion Chamber Installation Instructions
- Cover base with 3” insulation bricks without using cement. If the boiler is mounted on a hollow blue-brick ring, blocks are laid inside this.
- Mix cement and aggregate together with approximately 2 gallons of water. This forms the insulating concrete, part of which is used to tamp round the inside perimeter of the boiler base to seal against air filtration.
- Use 3” insulating bricks to build a wall to nipple height at the rear of the boiler, and also to cover the mild-steel skirt where applicable. In narrow boilers, 1”, 1½” and 2” insulating bricks are used to cover the skirt. Use jointing cement.
- Place pre-cast combustion chamber in position dry. Do not use jointing cement to joint pre-cast sections together.
- Using remainder of insulating concrete from step (b), fill between feet of combustion chamber sections to height of toe.
Use firebricks, backed with insulating bricks and jointed with cement, to build front wall to protect mild-steel plate and accommodate burner quarl, to be fitted to the correct height from floor to centre-line of burner.
